  • Health Priority: Improving access to care

About the project

As a follow up to the medical diagnoses and use of health resources prior to a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) diagnosis, this study explores the New Brunswick youths’ experiences during the pre-referral trajectory to the NB FASD Centre of Excellence from their perspective.

This study hopes to identify what youth have experienced while navigating the healthcare system and the barriers to care they faced before receiving a referral.

Understanding their experiences during this pre-referral trajectory will help increase the accessibility to post-referral care and contribute to improved care, better case management, and a more sensitive, holistic approach to referring youths for FASD.

Objectives
  1. To identify and understand New Brunswick youths’ pre-FASD referral experiences navigating the healthcare system from their perspectives;
  2. To identify the impact, patterns, and themes of their experiences on their emotional, physical, psychological, and financial well-being
  3. To provide recommendations to improve the referral pathway to the NB FASD Centre of Excellence
