MSSU Privacy Policy

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) is committed to respecting the privacy of our employees, partners, affiliates and visitors to our website. This Privacy Statement describes our privacy practices regarding information gathered on the MSSU website.

Collection, Use and Disclosure of Information

Personal Information

Our website does not automatically collect any personal information from you (e.g. name, address or phone number).  We only receive this information if you provide it voluntarily, by completing an online form or contacting us via email.  The MSSU only collects information in connection with MSSU services and activities and MSSU-related conferences or education sessions registration. We will protect any information that you do provide in accordance with applicable privacy legislation and MSSU policies and procedures.

The MSSU uses a third party company to assist with registration for conferences and education sessions.  While these companies may collect financial information from you (credit card number, banking information), this information is not received by the MSSU. When registering for an event, please refer to the provider’s website for more information on their privacy policies and security measures.

The MSSU also uses a third-party company to manage mailing lists for notification of events and distribution of electronic newsletters. If you change your mind after opting in to our mailing list, you can later choose to opt out of receiving these communications.

The MSSU only uses your personal information for the purpose it was collected unless you provide consent otherwise.

We do not disclose your personal information to anyone except MSSU personnel who will use the information for legitimate business purposes such as responding to your request or to the third-party companies in connection with the services described above. The MSSU does not rent or sell your personal information to anyone.

Non-personal Information

The MSSU’s web servers automatically log some information about visits to our web pages. These logs capture combined non-personal information about visitors such as:

  • The Internet domain and Internet Protocol (“IP”) address used to access the website
  • The type of browser and operating system used
  • The date and time of access
  • The uniform resource locator (URL) of pages visited
  • Addresses of other websites linked from
  • General geographic location


The MSSU does not use this information to attempt to identify individual visitors or track their usage. The information is used to increase the quality of our website by tracking the number of visitors and monitoring usage of the site and the types of technology used by our visitors.

Depending on the Internet service provider, in some cases, the Internet domain or IP address of visitors could allow for individual identification. If you are concerned about this, you may wish to ask your internet provider about their policies and practices.

Cookies

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small file containing an identification code that is transferred from a website to the hard drive of your computer. A cookie identifies your browser but does NOT let a website know any personal information about you, such as your name and address. Cookies cannot run on your computer, search your computer for other information or transmit any information to anyone.

How do we use cookies?

  • Improve the operation and performance of our website pages by making them easier and more convenient to use; for example, saving passwords and preferences so that you will not have to re-enter them the next time you visit.
  • Analyze general traffic patterns (such as which pages are most popular) and general statistics (such as the number of users, average time spent etc.). This information helps us to better understand when we should update, change or offer new services.
  • Use external web services in our site, for example displaying YouTube videos.
