We bring the Maritimes together to engage in patient-oriented health research through collaboration with government stakeholders, health authorities, researchers, patients and caregivers.

The MSSU is one of 11 SUPPORT Units that form part of the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) initiative that is match-funded by the provinces. 

The MSSU is the only SUPPORT Unit that serves more than one province, offering expertise, training, and resources to help engage patients and the public in health research across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

We are a virtual organization with over 50 staff at five locations across the Maritime provinces. This organizational structure helps to build and maintain relationships with important partners across our healthcare system – locally and regionally.

The MSSU teams at each location are based within a host organization:

• Fredericton, NB: New Brunswick Institute for Research, Data and Training (NB-IRDT) at the University of New Brunswick
• Moncton, NB: Vitalité Health Network, Centre hospitalier universitaire (CHU) Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont
• Saint John, NB: Health Research Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital, which is operated by Horizon Health
• Halifax, NS: Centre for Clinical Research, which is a part of the Nova Scotia Health Authority, and Health Data Nova Scotia, which is hosted by Dalhousie University
• Charlottetown, PEI: Centre for Health and Community Research at the University of Prince Edward Island
