Medical diagnoses and use of health resources prior to a FASD diagnosis: A retrospective study

  • Lead/Principal Investigator: Nicole Leblanc
  • Status: Active
  • Year Started: 2023
  • Location: Moncton, New Brunswick
  • Project Number: 2305-FASD Diagnosis-E_Dugas
  • Health Priority: Improving access to care

About the project

To reduce the individual, public health, and economic burden associated with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), it is critical to increase early FASD diagnostic capacity and awareness. These knowledge gaps compel a research agenda that aims to better understand individuals’ healthcare experiences and pre-referral trajectories of FASD in Canada.

Objectives
  1. To describe the number and types of health care professionals consulted, and
  2. To describe the number and types of medical diagnoses received by patients of the New Brunswick FASD Centre of Excellence prior to their FASD diagnosis.

What we learned

This study showed that access to a timely referral for FASD diagnosis is crucial for individuals living with FASD. Despite provincial and federal efforts, there is still a need for increased FASD education and HCPs awareness. Our study emphasizes the need for earlier FASD diagnostic referrals.
