A research team from Vitalité Health Network and Université de Moncton, supported by the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit, is studying the experiences of New Brunswick youth before they are referred to the NB FASD Centre of Excellence. By involving patients as equal partners, the study centers real-world experiences and aims to identify barriers to timely diagnosis.
This research will help improve the referral process, leading to quicker diagnoses and better support for individuals with FASD. The findings could also inform healthcare practices across Canada, making the system more responsive to the needs of youth and families affected by FASD. The research is a continuation of a previous descriptive study: “Medical diagnoses and use of health resources prior to a FASD diagnosis” which looked at the amount and frequency of patient’s diagnoses and visits with healthcare professionals prior to be referred to the NB FASD Centre of Excellence
