Maritime Health Research Summit: Moving the Dial on Learning Health Systems

Maritime Health Research Summit: Moving the Dial on Learning Health Systems

This year’s summit held October 24 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia was filled with inspiring discussions, new insights, and moments that highlighted the power of collaborative research to drive healthcare improvements across the Maritimes.

By the Numbers

The summit brought together:

  • 157 in-person attendees
  • 55 virtual attendees
  • 18 oral presentations
  • 3 trainee lightning talks
  • 40 poster presentations

Lightbulb Moments

Throughout the summit, speakers, patient partners, and attendees shared ideas and reflected on the unique aspects of a Learning Health System (LHS). Here’s a look at some of the standout quotes and takeaways that kept the energy alive:

“Be ok with failure!” – A reminder that every challenge and setback can lead to valuable insights and growth.

“Patient partners are key, and their voices must be heard more at these types of events.”

Developing and fostering a culture of a learning system can be done!”

“It’s about collaboration – between care providers, researchers, patient partners, clinicians, policymakers, etc.”

How Research Is Impacting Lives

We also heard real-world examples of how research is impacting our communities and improving lives. Some of the exciting projects include:

  • New infant feeding rooms at Cape Breton University
  • Innovative community care models for children and youth in New Brunswick
  • A Lung Cancer Screening Program in Nova Scotia
  • New in-hospital harm-reduction policies

These are just a few examples of the many ways health research is driving change in our communities, in partnership with people with lived or living experience.
