Maritime Health Research Summit attracts participants from across Canada

Researchers and experts from across Canada came together online for the first-ever Maritime Health Research Summit on Thursday, June 23. More than 230 people watched the virtual event hosted by the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU).

“On behalf of the MSSU, I want to thank all of the participants and our guest speakers for helping make this such a successful event to learn and reflect on equity, diversity, inclusion, sex and gender and Indigenous engagement in patient-oriented research,” said Dr. David Anderson, MSSU Nominated Principal Investigator.

The conference featured timely topics and practical information on how experts can incorporate wise practices in health equity into their research and heard first-hand from patients about the challenges faced within the health system.

One of the day’s highlights was the tale of two nurses, graciously shared by Jenny Perley, MSSU Indigenous Allyship and Engagement Team Member. Her powerful story demonstrated the importance of empathy and respect, while illustrating the need to provide culturally safe health care. As a trauma survivor, Perley is passionate about bringing cultural support and teachings to all her relations.
