Maintaining positive sexual health is crucial in mitigating these long-term effects, yet it remains largely overlooked in research and care. Despite the prevailing dominance of the biomedical model in medical training, practice, and research, there is a critical need for research to bridge the gap between theory and practice in adopting the comprehensive biopsychosocial model in healthcare. The proposed doctoral research comprises two studies aimed at addressing these issues. The first study (relevant to this application) seeks to develop a statistical model of cancer survivors’ sexual health through a biopsychosocial framework.
Five cancer survivors guided the research methodology and will aid in the interpretation of the results of the proposed research. Individuals with lived experience with varying demographic backgrounds were consulted to approve the inclusion of questionnaires and determine the development of open-ended questions for oncology care providers. Through regular consensus meetings, they will assess whether their interpretations of the qualitative data and emerging themes align and provide advice on various methods to disseminate the results.
The outcomes will inform the development of tailored interventions and training programs for care providers in Canada, ultimately enhancing the quality of cancer care.
