About the project

This project examined the use of Nova Scotia’s 811 telehealth system, which was introduced in 2009. The service included a 24/7 telephone line (accessible by dialing 8-1-1 or 7-1-1 for TTY) and a website with evidence-based information on over 500 health topics. Through the phone service, callers were connected with Registered Nurses who provided non-emergency medical advice in more than 125 languages.

The MSSU carried out a study on behalf of the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness to better understand how and why people used—or did not use—the 811 services. The study paid particular attention to the experiences of vulnerable and marginalized groups, aiming to identify ways to improve awareness and use of the service.
