Funding opportunity now open for trainees pursuing patient-oriented research

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) is excited to announce the launch of the 2024-
2025 Trainee Support Program, an initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of patient-
oriented health researchers.

The MSSU Trainee Support Program offers funding opportunities for individuals pursuing
patient-oriented health research in a Master’s, Doctoral, or Postdoctoral Fellow program at a
Maritime University. The program is open to students from any faculty and/or department, not
limited to those traditionally associated with health sciences. However, the research must be
health-related and patient-oriented, taking into consideration patient interests and needs, and
address a health research priority in the province in which the trainee attends university.
Applicants must be supervised by an MSSU Associate Scientist.

Funding Amounts and Duration:

  • Master’s Level: $10,000 for 1 year
  • Doctorate Level: $15,000/year for 2 years
  • Post Doctoral Level: $20,000/year for 2 years

Beyond providing financial support, MSSU actively assists successful recipients in meaningfully
engaging patients in their research. We equip them with the necessary tools and resources to
ensure that patient perspectives are not just considered but are integral to the research process.

“Supporting new researchers is crucial for advancing patient engagement and improving the
landscape of health research in the Maritimes. By empowering these individuals, we are
investing in a future where research not only addresses the pressing health issues of our region
but actively involves and benefits the patients and communities it aims to serve,” said Dr. Daniel
Dutton, MSSU Science Lead for Capacity Development.

Applications for this competition will be accepted until March 22. An online information session
is scheduled for February 22 to learn more about the process and answer any questions about
the program.
