Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit Announces 2023-2024 Trainee Funding Recipients

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) is pleased to announce the funding recipients of the 2023-2024 Trainee Support Program, an initiative that provides vital financial support to trainees engaged in patient-oriented health research across the Maritimes. The MSSU has selected 10 outstanding individuals to receive funding for the upcoming year with a total investment of $210,000.

The MSSU’s trainee funding program is an integral part of its mission to advance patient-oriented research in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. This initiative aims to support trainees at various stages of their academic journey, including Masters, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral Fellow levels, who are actively involved in patient-oriented health research. Trainees must be under the supervision of an MSSU Scientist, ensuring a strong foundation for mentorship and guidance throughout their research endeavors.

The selection process for this year’s trainee recipients was rigorous and comprehensive. A panel of scientists and Patient/Public Partners lent their expertise to the evaluation and selection of the most promising projects. This collaborative approach ensures that the funded research projects not only align with scientific excellence but also prioritize the needs and perspectives of patients and the community.

“We are thrilled to announce this year’s recipients of the MSSU trainee funding,” said Dr. Daniel Dutton, Capacity Development Science Lead of the MSSU. “The caliber of applications we received speaks to the growing understanding and value of patient-oriented research and of the talent of these emerging researchers. We are confident that the selected trainees will make significant contributions to patient-oriented health research, further enriching the research landscape in our region.”

The MSSU extends its heartfelt congratulations to the funding recipients of the 2023-2024 Trainee Support Program and expresses its gratitude to the panel of evaluators for their valuable contributions. The MSSU remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing patient-oriented research and looks forward to witnessing the impact of these research endeavors on the health and well-being of the Maritimes’ communities.
