Congratulations to the 2022-2023 Trainee Support Program recipients

Congratulations to the 2022-2023 Trainee Support Program recipients

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the MSSU Trainee Support Program for 2022-23.

Each year the MSSU provides financial support to trainees pursuing patient-oriented health research in the Maritimes. The 2022-23 program was open to trainees (Masters, Doctoral, Postdoctoral Fellow) in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, who are supervised by an MSSU Scientist.

“We are proud to invest in the next generation of researchers conducting important patient-oriented research in our region to improve patient health and the health system,” says Dr. Daniel Dutton, Science Lead, Capacity Development, MSSU. “From studying important topics of anxiety and obesity to exploring equity and diversity in healthcare experiences, these trainees have demonstrated a commitment to patient-oriented research – the mandate of the MSSU.”

This year’s competition represents a total investment of $190,000 and supports nine trainees, selected by a panel of scientists and Patient Partners.

“I am so appreciative of the MSSU’s support of my postdoctoral research. This award is especially meaningful to me because it funds research aimed at having a direct benefit on the ground by lessening barriers to Patient Partner compensation and ensuring greater equity, diversity, and inclusion. I am thankful for the MSSU for helping to fund research into how best to create change on this front,” says 2022 recipient Kathryn Asher, Postdoctoral Fellow, Centre for Research in Integrated Care, University of New Brunswick.

The MSSU Trainee Support Program, formerly known as the MSSU Student Awards and the NBHRF & CIHR-SPOR-MSSU Studentship/Fellowship program, has supported 101 trainees pursing patient-oriented research since 2014.

Congratulations to all recipients! We look forward to your contributions to health-related research in the region.
