SUMMARY:Building a Maritime Pediatric Learning Health System with Youth\, Families\, Clinicians\, and Community Partners
DESCRIPTION:Building a Maritime Pediatric Learning Health System with Youth\, Families\, Clinicians\, and Community Partners\n March 11\n @\n12:00 pm\n –\n1:00 pm\n \n Register for this session\n \nA look inside implementing a learning health system to advance equitable pediatric care\nMaritime Child Health (MCH) is a five-year donor-funded initiative at IWK Health established to address complex challenges facing pediatric healthcare today. Across five provincial health organizations\, children and families access care through multiple pathways\, resulting in variation in levels of service delivery and unequal access to evidence-based care. \nUsing a learning health system (LHS) approach\, MCH connects real-time data\, lived experience\, research\, and care to continuously identify what works\, address gaps\, and drive action. MCH aims to create an adaptive system that meets the needs of children\, youth\, families\, and clinicians regardless of where they live or work \nRecognizing that strong partnerships are at the heart of an effective LHS\, MCH prioritized collaboration to build momentum and a shared vision to propel their mandate forward. In this session\, you’ll hear about MCH’s approach to developing a pediatric LHS and the role of implementation science in moving from theory to action. We’ll share examples of the initiatives MCH has undertaken to engage youth and families\, clinicians\, and community partners from across the Maritimes. Looking to the future\, we’ll discuss what’s next to advance both the science and practice of a pediatric interprovincial LHS. \nMeet the speakers\n\nGrace MacIntyre BSc.\nGrace graduated from Dalhousie University with a BSc in Health Promotion (2025). She is a former patient partner turned research assistant. Grace has worked in the Strengthening Transitions in Care (STIC) Lab at IWK Health within Dr. Christine Cassidy’s program of research since 2024. She is involved with projects related to the transition from pediatric to adult care\, integrated knowledge transition\, equity-focused implementation science\, and learning health systems (LHS). Recently\, Grace completed a Mitacs Accelerate Internship with Maritime Child Health where she led a study to understand patients’ and caregivers’ needs\, values\, and perspectives related to engagement in a health-equity focused pediatric LHS. Working closely with the Maritime Child Health team and Dr. Cassidy\, Grace supports the integration of implementation science and patient-oriented research methods into the science and practice of the LHS. In her free time\, Grace enjoys baking and cooking\, listening to podcasts\, travelling\, and spending time with family and friends. \n\nKatie McDonald (MN RN)\nKatie McDonald MN RN\, is the manager of Maritime Child Health. In this role she is accountable for providing leadership and fostering partnerships aimed at building an integrated and accessible system of pediatric services to improve outcomes for Maritime children\, youth and families. From Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, she is a pediatric nurse who has spent the last 15 years supporting pediatric care\, education\, and service planning. She is committed to ensuring all children and youth have access to equitable\, quality pediatric care as close to home as possible. She recognizes and is grateful to be able to live\, work\, and play on the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. \n\nDr. Christine Cassidy (PhD RN)\nDr. Christine Cassidy\, PhD\, RN is a Registered Nurse\, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Dalhousie University\, and Clinician Scientist at IWK Health. She is the Co-Director of the Strengthening Transitions in Care Lab at IWK Health. She received her BScN from the University of Prince Edward Island and PhD in Nursing from Dalhousie University. Dr. Cassidy completed a CIHR Health System Impact Postdoctoral Fellowship at IWK Health and University of Ottawa with the Integrated Knowledge Translation (IKT) Research Network. Her program of research uses an IKT approach to design\, implement\, and evaluate knowledge translation interventions for transitions in care and advance learning health systems. As Scientific Lead of Maritime Child Health\, Dr. Cassidy provides support to ensure the integration of a learning health systems approach and implementation science principles into the strategic plan and initiatives of Maritime Child Health.

SUMMARY:Learning in Action: Transforming National Guidance in Pediatric Pain into Local Impact
DESCRIPTION:Learning in Action: Transforming National Guidance in Pediatric Pain into Local Impact\nSeptember 10\n@\n12:00 pm\n–\n1:00 pm\n\nRegister now\n \nA look inside the implementation of a national standard through a learning health system lens\nThe CAN/HSO13200:2023 Pediatric Pain Management is the first-ever national standard for pediatric pain care. Grounded in a range of evidence\, this framework guides quality\, equitable care that reflects the needs of children from birth to 18 years old and their families. But\, the standard alone is just one part of the solution—the real gains for patients happen when it’s put into practice. \nIn this session\, you’ll hear the story behind the standard—why it was needed\, how it was developed in partnership between Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP) and the Health Standards Organization\, and what it means for improving care for children across the country. Then you’ll learn how the standard is being applied in Nova Scotia through a collaborative approach involving IWK Health and rural hospitals across the province. We’ll walk through practical steps for implementation—understanding local context\, identifying what’s working well and where there are gaps\, and connecting teams with the right tools and resources. This process highlights how the standard is broken down into focused\, actionable priorities at pilot sites. This work is part of SKIP\, a national knowledge mobilization network\, and the broader Maritime Child Health initiative\, a pediatric learning health system that brings together clinicians and data experts to support timely\, evidence-informed responses to pressing patient needs. \nMeet Our Speakers\n\nDr. Katie Birnie\, Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor\, University of Calgary\nDr. Katie Birnie\, PhD RPsych\, is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor at the University of Calgary. She is also the Associate Scientific Director of Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP)\, a national network based at Dalhousie University mobilizing evidence-based solutions for children’s pain through coordination and collaboration. Dr. Birnie chaired the working group that developed the world’s first national health standard for Pediatric Pain Management in 2023 in partnership with SKIP and the Health Standards Organization (CAN/HSO 13200:2023). \n\nPatti Douglas\, Clinical Implementation Specialist in Pediatric Pain Management\nPatti Douglas\, BScN RN\, is the Clinical Implementation Specialist in Pediatric Pain Management with IWK Health’s pediatric-LHS ‘Maritime Child Health’ in collaboration with Solutions for Kids in Pain. Originally from PEI\, she began her career as a registered nurse in Truro before joining IWK Health\, giving her a broader lens of resource availability throughout the region. Most recently\, she played a key role in acquiring ChildKind certification and supporting the IWK’s Pain Champion group. She’s excited to build on that momentum and aid in implementing the National Pediatric Pain management standard across the Maritimes!

SUMMARY:Learning Loops: Policy-driven evidence and evidence-driven policy
DESCRIPTION:Policy and Practice \nLearning Loops: Policy-driven evidence and evidence-driven policy\nEvidence-informed policy\, while often touted as the gold standard\, can be difficult to achieve in practice. It takes considerable organizational effort and resources to understand complex problems and develop appropriate strategies. In recent years\, the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists (NSCP) has been working to achieve just this. Since 2018\, they have invested in an embedded researcher role\, and worked to establish meaningful relationships with academic and consultant researchers. This effort is exemplified in their Staffing and Workload Initiative for Safety and Effectiveness (StaffWISE) project\, which has collected more than one million data points to better understand the relationships between pharmacy staffing\, practitioner wellbeing\, and quality of care. This has led to the implementation of a new Pharmacy Staffing Level policy\, as well as broader opportunities to understand the pharmacies they regulate. Join us to learn more about the NSCP’s data-driven approach to their work and how this supports a culture of learning within the organization. \n \n Register\n \nMeet our Speakers\n \nDr. Andrea Bishop\nDirector\, Research and Engagement\, Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists\nDr. Bishop is the Director of Research and Engagement at the NSCP. Dr. Bishop completed a PhD at Dalhousie University in 2013 exploring patient engagement in patient safety. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Saint Mary’s University in organizational psychology\, as well as another fellowship in behavioural and implementation science at the IWK Health Centre that explored communication behaviours across transitions of care. Dr. Bishop was a founding member of SafetyNET-Rx\, a research and outreach program that encouraged and supported an open dialogue regarding medication errors and quality within community pharmacies in Nova Scotia. At the NSCP\, she hosted the Wicked Problems Summits in 2018 and 2019\, facilitating nation-wide dialogue on wicked problems facing the profession. Dr. Bishop holds an adjunct faculty position with the College of Pharmacy\, Dalhousie University. \n \nEric Coates\nDirector\, Professional Services\, Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists\nEric Coates is the Director of Professional Services at the NSCP. In this role he is responsible for overseeing Quality Assurance\, Pharmacy Practice\, and Professional Accountability. Before joining the College\, Eric spent nine years in various leadership roles at Nova Scotia Health. Most recently\, he held dual positions as Clinical Director of the Halifax Infirmary Emergency Department and Central Zone Director of Clinical Transformation. He also served as a Health Services Manager in Emergency Departments located in Windsor\, Sackville\, and Halifax\, along with a brief tenure as a Quality and Patient Safety Leader in the NSH Accreditation Unit. Eric brings a depth of experience in quality improvement\, patient safety principles\, clinical practice standards\, and interdisciplinary leadership. As a leader in Emergency Medicine and former paramedic\, he has successfully implemented process improvements\, conducted quality reviews and developed new care pathways.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Public Health Mobile Units in Nova Scotia
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge \nThe Evolution of Public Health Mobile Units in Nova Scotia\nThe Public Health Mobile Units were launched in December 2020\, as a nimble part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Whether operating from specially equipped vans or community clinics\, these interdisciplinary healthcare teams are continuously learning and adapting to meet the needs of Nova Scotians\, particularly those from underserved communities. There are several ways that the team generates knowledge to drive service and quality improvement including end-of-shift reports\, client surveys\, and ongoing feedback. An evaluation and engagement process helped inform the evolution of this public health program. In this session\, Holly Gillis and Louise Hanavan will share how engagement is informing the role of Public Health Mobile Units after the pandemic—and some tips for engaging interested parties in health service improvement. \n  \nLearn more and find a Public Health Mobile Unit near you. \nLearn more about the evaluation and engagement work Public Health Mobile Unit | Engage4Health \n \n Watch the recording\n \nMeet our speakers\n \nHolly Gillis\nDirector\, Public Health Mobile Units\, Nova Scotia Health\nHolly joined Public Health in 2007 as a Health Promoter after working for the Canadian Cancer Society-Nova Scotia Division and South Shore Community Services Association.  Over her time with Nova Scotia Health\, she has had a progressive leadership path across many roles including Project Manager Innovation and Transformation\, School Health Manager\, Operations Coordinator\, Healthy Communities Manager. SUMMARY:Keeping up with Knowledge Translation: Showcasing health System Impact Fellows Support for Learning Health Systems in Nova Scotia
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Health System Impact Fellowships embed early career researchers within health systems across Canada. In this session\, three Health System Impact fellows will briefly present their fellowship activities\, reflecting on how they support Learning Health System (LHS) approaches in Nova Scotia. A panel discussion will follow the presentations.  \n \n Register for the webinar\n \nAbout the Speakers\n \nDr. Mari Somerville \nHealth System Impact Fellow\, IWK Health – Improving patient safety through LHS implementation \n  \nMari is a CIHR Health System Impact Postdoctoral Fellow with IWK Health and Dalhousie University. Her program of research involves understanding the science of learning health systems and using these findings to implement evidence-based patient safety recommendations across IWK Health. Mari will share her recent work on applying a behaviour change framework to understand the root cause of precursor level safety events within the health centre.  Previously\, Mari completed a Master of Public Health with an emphasis in Global Health and Nutrition\, and completed her PhD at Griffith University in Australia. Mari also has a BSc in Nutrition and is a Registered Dietitian.  \n \nDr. Brittany Barber \nHealth System Impact Fellow\, IWK Health – Advancing Environmentally Sustainable LHSs \nBrittany is a CIHR Health System Impact Postdoctoral Fellow at IWK Health and Dalhousie University. Brittany completed her PhD at Dalhousie University where she investigated how to adapt health interventions for prevention of chronic diseases by applying geo-spatial methods and behavioural economic principles to collect spatiotemporal information about the contexts of patients’ day-to-day routines to strengthen behaviour change interventions. Her doctoral research provided expertise of interdisciplinary theory and methods for addressing complex health challenges\, like integrating contexts of patients’ behaviours within clinical settings to improve design of health services. Working with IWK Health\, Brittany is addressing environmentally sustainable health system change by improving implementation of data to advance a culture of rapid learning and effectiveness of low-carbon health service delivery. Her program of work advances implementation of environmentally sustainable learning health systems and contributes innovative ways of using real-time clinical and administrative data for informed decision-making in practice. \n  \n \nDr. Hilary Caldwell \nHealth System Impact Fellow\, NS Dept. of Education and Early Childhood Development – Creating healthy\, active schools \nHilary is a CIHR Health System Impact Fellow with the Healthy Populations Institute at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Hilary studied Kinesiology at Dalhousie University and then completed her MSc and PhD degrees in Kinesiology at McMaster University. Hilary’s graduate research focused on physical activity\, fitness\, physical literacy and health in preschoolers and school-age children. From 2019-2020\, Hilary completed a Health System Impact Fellowship (doctoral stream) with City of Hamilton Public Health Services. Hilary returned to Halifax in 2020 and is thrilled to contribute to projects and research related to health promotion in schools\, child health and well-being\, and healthy equity.
