DESCRIPTION:Learning in Action: Transforming National Guidance in Pediatric Pain into Local Impact\nSeptember 10\n@\n12:00 pm\n–\n1:00 pm\n\nRegister now\n \nA look inside the implementation of a national standard through a learning health system lens\nThe CAN/HSO13200:2023 Pediatric Pain Management is the first-ever national standard for pediatric pain care. Grounded in a range of evidence\, this framework guides quality\, equitable care that reflects the needs of children from birth to 18 years old and their families. But\, the standard alone is just one part of the solution—the real gains for patients happen when it’s put into practice. \nIn this session\, you’ll hear the story behind the standard—why it was needed\, how it was developed in partnership between Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP) and the Health Standards Organization\, and what it means for improving care for children across the country. Then you’ll learn how the standard is being applied in Nova Scotia through a collaborative approach involving IWK Health and rural hospitals across the province. We’ll walk through practical steps for implementation—understanding local context\, identifying what’s working well and where there are gaps\, and connecting teams with the right tools and resources. This process highlights how the standard is broken down into focused\, actionable priorities at pilot sites. This work is part of SKIP\, a national knowledge mobilization network\, and the broader Maritime Child Health initiative\, a pediatric learning health system that brings together clinicians and data experts to support timely\, evidence-informed responses to pressing patient needs. \nMeet Our Speakers\n\nDr. Katie Birnie\, Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor\, University of Calgary\nDr. Katie Birnie\, PhD RPsych\, is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor at the University of Calgary. She is also the Associate Scientific Director of Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP)\, a national network based at Dalhousie University mobilizing evidence-based solutions for children’s pain through coordination and collaboration. Dr. Birnie chaired the working group that developed the world’s first national health standard for Pediatric Pain Management in 2023 in partnership with SKIP and the Health Standards Organization (CAN/HSO 13200:2023). \n\nPatti Douglas\, Clinical Implementation Specialist in Pediatric Pain Management\nPatti Douglas\, BScN RN\, is the Clinical Implementation Specialist in Pediatric Pain Management with IWK Health’s pediatric-LHS ‘Maritime Child Health’ in collaboration with Solutions for Kids in Pain. Originally from PEI\, she began her career as a registered nurse in Truro before joining IWK Health\, giving her a broader lens of resource availability throughout the region. Most recently\, she played a key role in acquiring ChildKind certification and supporting the IWK’s Pain Champion group. She’s excited to build on that momentum and aid in implementing the National Pediatric Pain management standard across the Maritimes!

DESCRIPTION:We recently held an information session about the 2023-2024 MSSU Trainee Support Program for applicants and/or their supervisors. \nThis funding opportunity is open to trainees engaged in patient-oriented health research and entering or enrolled in a Master’s\, Doctoral\, or Postdoctoral Fellow program at universities in New Brunswick\, Nova Scotia\, and Prince Edward Island. Trainees must be supervised by an MSSU Associate Scientist. \nWe will review eligibility requirements and the application process\, and answer any questions that you might have. \nEnglish session only.
